The Cincinnati Bengals started well but then collapsed in the second half, losing the game... and self-respect.

Apparently the Cincinnati Bengals had a gameplan. And that gameplan called for a hint of nasty with a delayed twist of ineffectiveness. We're not talking about the result of said attempted production -- like against the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins. No. This is the one where the Bengals wanted to bring the nasty to the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's Sunday Night Football, against a rival that's beaten them during four straight games.

Right.

That's not the Cincinnati Bengals. Not this year. A mistake-plagued team, often faced with imminent self-destruction leaving a wake of postgame comments with cliched "we'll get better" that's both disbelieving and tired.

For a moment the "nasty" worked, mixed with aggressive fourth down conversions and a pounding philosophy hoping to generate an ineffective rushing offense. Instead the resulting decay of eventuality was led by a failed Cincinnati Bengals third down defense and the insane embarrassment when asked if anyone could supplement a suffocating coverage scheme on A.J. Green. Jermaine Gresham, where are you? Andrew Hawkins, what happened? Ryan Whalen, you had a couple of nice grabs, but where was that fourth quarter reception that you bobbled?

Really? The supposed "gameplan" called for Whalen being the team's leading receiver? Gresham and Hawkins. You failed during Sunday Night Football to assist in your troubled teammates attempts to push the football with any sustained effort.

Despite generating two turnovers in the first half, one of which directly resulted into an eight-yard touchdown reception to A.J. Green, Cincinnati's inability to generate a pass rush against Ben Roethlisberger allowed Pittsburgh to generate four first-half possessions that generated 12 combined first downs with scores on three of five possessions. The others being a Roethlisberger fumble and an interception in the endzone.

An exchange of field goals summarized the third quarter and a depression of awful finalized Cincinnati's 24-17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Cincinnati Bengals take the week off for a Bye before hosting the Denver Broncos on November 4.

The Steelers took a seven-point lead early in the fourth quarter, leading the Bengals by a score of 24-17 in Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday Night Football. Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers finished off an eight play, 67-yard drive when running back Chris Rainey plunged into the end zone from 11 yards out. The drive just 4:42 off the clock, beginning in the third quarter and was made possible mostly by two third-and-long conversions allowed by the Bengals secondary.

First Roethlisberger completed a 16-yard pass to wide receiver Antonio Brown on a third-and-eight play to keep the drive alive and then he completed a 31-yard pass to Emmanuel Sanders on a third-and-six. Also, despite the fact that the Steelers' top two running backs are out, Rainey has been a part of a fairly successful running attack that has racked up 91 yards at this point in the game.

The Bengals get the ball back with just over 14 minutes left in the game, which is plenty of time to either tie the game and take back the momentum, or shoot themselves in the foot. Hopefully the first thing happens.

What is it with the third quarter? Following a reasonably productive Bengals possession, which led to a 48-yard field goal to take a 17-14 lead early in the second half, the Steelers pushed the football.

On first down from the Bengals 35-yard line, Ben Roethlisberger fires a fast ball to Antonio Brown with Adam Jones covering, picking up 20 yards to the Benagls 41-yard line. Mike Wallace takes the end around, down the right sidelines for another 13 yard gain.

Then it was over.

Geno Atkins dominated Willie Colon for an eight-yard quarterback sack...

...followed by a 12-yard Mike Wallace reception and incomplete deep down the right sidelines.

Shaun Suisham converts the 42-yard field goal, tying the game at 17.

After the Bengals lost Kyle Cook for an extended period of time, they signed 10-year veteran Jeff Faine. Faine has started every game so far this season, but is now on the sidelines due to what the announcers called a hamstring injury. When the camera showed him on the sidelines, he was standing there without his helmet on but didn't appear to be worked on by the medical staff.

Robinson, the backup center and right guard, was an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame. He stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs 305 pounds. He played in all four preseason games, and saw action after week three on special teams. It is currently unclear as to whether or not Faine will be back in this game or not, and if he isn't it's likely the Steelers defense will likely try to pick on Robinson to pressure Dalton.

This is the kind of opportunity that allow college free agents the opportunity to shine in the NFL and show why they deserved to be drafted. Stay tuned for updates on Faine's injury.

Brandon Tate opened the second half with a nice 45-yard kickoff return, angling near the right sidelines before he's tackled at Cincinnati's 38-yard line.

It started promising with a third-and-four conversion with 13 minutes remaining in the third quarter, hitting rookie Mohamed Sanu out of the slot for a 17-yard pick up, pushing the offense onto Pittsburgh's side of the field.

Yet we have a problem. It stalled.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis combined for nine yards rushing on consecutive runs, reaching the Steelers 30-yard line. Andy Dalton tries a deep pass down the middle of the field, tipped by Keenan Lewis that likely saved a touchdown.

The Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers come out of half time with a 14-point tie.

The Cincinnati Bengals open the second half with the football during a game tied at 14. Can the Bengals break their third quarter woes and step on Pittsburgh's throat? Or will they continue to play big-play offense with a bend but don't break defense?

After the first half of play in Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday Night Football, the Cincinnati Bengals are tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers at 14. Through the first two quarters, both teams have had a few misques, but the Steelers are by far and away the team that has made the more costly mistakes. Not only did Mike Wallace drop two wide open first-down passes, but running back Baron Batch dropped a wide open pass thrown from a wide receiver on a trick play that, if he had caught it, would have resulted in a guaranteed touchdown. Ben Roethlisberger also through an interception to Chris Crocker in the end zone and he also fumbled, losing the ball to Bengals defensive end Wallace Gilberry.

The Bengals aren't without their fare share of mistakes. After taking a 14-6 lead, the Bengals got the ball back and were threatening to take a commanding 21-6 lead heading into halftime. However, Andy Dalton had a pass tipped and intercepted by Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley. This led to a touchdown pass thrown by Roethlisberger to tight end Heath Miller, bringing the score to 14-12. The Steelers then went for the two-point conversion, where Rothlisberger found Miller in the end zone again, tying the game.

While the Bengals outplayed the Steelers through the majority of the first half, the Steelers are obviously not the kind of team that they can let hang around. The Bengals decided to let Dalton run out the clock to end the first half, content with a tie ballgame. Dalton and company will get the ball back to start the second half and the best possible thing that they could do would be to come out fast and put some points on the board, preferably in the form of a touchdown, to set the tone for the second half.

The Bengals were led by Dalton, who was 10 of 14 for 65 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the first half, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who has 46 yards on 10 carries and Jermaine Gresham, who has three catches for 19 yards. A.J. Green also has a touchdown catch, which is his sixth game in a row with a score.

The Steelers were led by Roethlisberger, who was 15 for 21 for 138 yards, a touchdown and an interception, Jonathan Dwyer, who has 52 yards on eight carries and Antonio Brown, who has 60 yards on five catches.

Just when it seemed that the Bengals would take a stranglehold on the game, they did what they do best--shoot themselves in the foot. In another example of sloppiness on Sunday night, Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton's odd interception was the sloppiest of them all.

The Steelers had a short field to work with in a short amount of time and took advantage. While the Bengals played a "bend but don't break" defense, they broke right before the half. After churning out some tough yards, the Steelers scored a touchdown on a five-yard pass from Ben Roethlisberger to Heath Miller. After a weird clock malfunction on their two-point conversion attempt, Roethlisberger found Miller again to tie the game at 14-14.

On another note, the attendees of Paul Brown Stadium should be ashamed at the volume of "HEATH" chants. Bengals will sit on it before the half.
