Pat Sims, who has been inactive on the PUP list and out for the season, will be activated on the 53-man roster at some point on Friday.

According to Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, defensive tackle Pat Sims will be activated on Friday. Once that officially happens he'll be placed on the active roster. This was the final week that Sims was exempted, due to NFL rules and would have been forced into activation or to remain on the PUP for the rest of the season.

In the meantime the Bengals require a corresponding roster move because Sims would no longer have an exemption applied to him. That can include waiving, releasing or placing someone on a season-ending injury list; anything to remove the player from the active 53-man roster.

The Bengals have yet to officially announce the change.

Among a couple of little nuggets (or grenades, depending on how you look at it) that Bengals head coach gave the media on Friday was some news on defensive tackle Pat Sims. The big lineman was relegated to the PUP List through the first seven games and was just allowed to practice for the first time all season this past week. He had been recovering from a severe ankle injury that he suffered late in the 2011 season.

Along with the unfortunate news surrounding linebacker/defensive end Dontay Moch, the Bengals will be without Sims' services this weekend against the Denver Broncos. According to head coach Marvin Lewis, Sims has looked good in practice this week, but it's likely that they want to get him into football shape and not rush him back to quickly. We could be seeing him in the next couple of weeks, as the Bengals were granted a three-week roster exemption for Sims.

The sooner they get him back, the better. The once-stout Bengals rush defense has not looked the same without the big man clogging the middle. Third-string Steelers running back torched the Bengals defense for over 100 yards two weeks ago.

Finally, as some may express with a sigh of unbelievable relief.

Defensive tackle Pat Sims, who has been on the Physically Unable to Perform list since Training Camp, will take part in his first practice of the year. Per the league rules, Sims will be able to practice for three-weeks without counting against the 53-man roster. When he's scheduled to play his first game, the team will need to make a roster move to make room for him on the active roster.

Sims suffered two ankle injuries last year, placed on IR after the second occurred during practice. He had a hamstring issue this year that's kept him off the field.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Pat Sims remains on the Physically Unable to Perform list this week with a hamstring and according to Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, Sims will require a little more time before he starts practicing.

Due to the league rules, Sims is only allowed one more week on the PUP before the Bengals are required to make a decision. Once Sims begins practicing, the Bengals will be granted a three-week exemption, so he won't count against the 53-man roster as he conditions and prepares for the second half of the regular season.

"We’re waiting on Pat to where Pat can help us. He’s being given certain guidelines to do so that he can achieve it quickly. He’s got some time,” (Bengals head coach Marvin) Lewis said.

Lewis indicates that he wants to be absolutely sure that Sims is ready to practice before pulling him off PUP.

If Sims doesn't start practicing next week, he'll remain on the PUP for the remainder of the season.

The defensive tackle is eligible to come off PUP this week, but has a three-week window before a decision is made -- practice or IR.

Pat Sims, who signed a one-year deal during the offseason, has spent the entire season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, a designation he's had dating back to training camp with a pair of injured ankles that placed him on Injured Reserve last year. An injury that impacted the Cincinnati Bengals rushing defense, perhaps indirectly last year:

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis told reporters on Wednesday that Sims won't be coming off PUP this week. The earliest a player can come off PUP is after the sixth game of the regular season, which was after the Bengals lost to the Cleveland Browns. However teams have a three-week window that allows the injured player to stay on PUP, not counting against the 53-man roster and an additional three-week window after the injured player begins practicing, exempt from the 53 until he's officially activated onto the roster.

The deal that Sims signed includes a base $700,000 salary with a $250,000 signing bonus, workout bonus of $250,000 and a roster bonus of $240,000, accounting for an overall cap number of $1.44 million.

Bengals defensive tackle Pat Sims could be returning to practice next week

When Pat Sims went down with a severe ankle injury late last season, the Bengals' rush defense collapsed down the stretch. The team invested two high picks at the position this year, in second-rounder Devon Still and third-rounder Brandon Thompson, and by most accounts, the youngsters have looked good early in camp. Some have begun to wonder if Sims would be the odd man out in the competition at the position because the team usually carries four players.

Sims, who signed a one-year deal earlier this offseason, has been rehabbing vigorously to get back on the field. According to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, that time could be arriving soon.

The return of Sims will only help the club. Not only will he provide depth at the position, but they'll be able to get a good read on just how far he has come since his injury. The truth is, even though the club invested picks in Still and Thompson, they don't have a player of Sims' mold and specialties on the roster. Though he has never been a starter since joining the team in 2008, Sims has consistently done well against the run and commanded double-teams because of his size. While he is still currently a candidate for the PUP List, he won't be if he returns to the practice field.

The Cincinnati Bengals released their list of players on Active/PUP, including defensive tackle Pat Sims.

Around the same time that the Bengals placed Dre Kirkpatrick on the Active/NFI list, Cincinnati also announced that cornerback Nate Clements (abdominal), Jordan Shipley (knee), Pat Sims (ankle) and Mike Nugent are headed to the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List. Unlike the Reserve/PUP, any one of those players can return to practice as soon as they're medically cleared.

Clements has been dealing with an abdominal problem throughout the offseason with some wondering about the extended time his recovery is taking. Pat Sims is also recovering from a pair of ankle injuries last year that placed him on Injured Reserve, missing the final five games last season. Jordan Shipley is also rehabilitating from a major knee injury during the second game of the season last year while Mike Nugent's injury isn't immediately known.

If those players need an extended period of time to recover, then the Active/PUP is the first step towards the reserve/PUP where players sit out for the first six weeks while the Bengals receive a roster exemption for that player.

Following the moves the team made to the practice squad Wednesday, the Cincinnati Bengals announced that Defensive Tackle Pat Sims is placed on Injured Reserve, ending his season. Sims is the fifth player to end his season prematurely due to injury, following linebackers Keith Rivers and Roddrick Muckelroy, wide receiver Jordan Shipley, cornerback Leon Hall and tight end Bo Scaife. Sims, who showed up at practice on Wednesday, recently injured his ankle against the Cleveland Browns.

Sims played in 11 games this season, starting one (against the Indianapolis Colts) and finishing the year with 20 tackles and a quarterback sack (against the Jacksonville Jaguars). Sims was part of an excellent three-man defensive tackle rotation, primarily playing against the run along-side Domata Peko.

The team filled the 53-man roster by signing Nick Hayden, who reportedly visited the team on Tuesday. Hayden, selected in the sixth round during the 2008 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers, was a two-time Honorable Mention All-Big Ten team during his collegiate career at Wisconsin.

He remained in Carolina through the 2010 season, starting 10 games that year and posting 31 tackles and a quarterback sack that year.
