We take a look at the injuries that the Bengals sustained against the Detroit Lions.

For the second time in as many weeks, Cincinnati won a game applying a full-team effort; from the defense holding the Lions inside one minute remaining in regulation, to the offense putting Mike Nugent into position to convert the game-winning 54-yard field goal.

But it wasn't without its price.

By our count, seven Bengals players went down on Sunday. Bengals defensive end Michael Johnson and Reggie Nelson each sustained injuries, but returned later in the game. Wide receiver Marvin Jones jammed his shoulder during his third quarter touchdown, but returned after a momentary visit in the locker room -- even converting a third down reception later in the half.

However, four players left the game and didn't return.

Devon Still was carted off in the second quarter with an elbow, while Wallace Gilberry (knee) and Rey Maualuga (hamstring) came out of the game in the fourth quarter. It's currently unknown how serious their injuries are and how much time, if any, they'll miss.

The notable injury was Leon Hall's first quarter Achilles injury. While no official word or confirmed reports have surfaced about it being a season-ender, there's little doubt that that's the feeling coming out of the lockerroom on Sunday. Defending Calvin Johnson's corner route in the endzone, Hall trips on the field which caused the injury.

Per Coley Harvey with ESPN:

Bengals cornerback Terence Newman said he and Nelson nearly cried on the sideline when they learned fellow corner Leon Hall suffered his second Achilles injury in three years. Lewis called the injury "significant."

Obviously we'll hear more about everyone's injuries in the coming days and we'll have them for you.

Bengals tight end Jermaine Gresham actually had a productive afternoon against the Lions. However, at one point he was sent to the lockerroom to "clear his head".

Bengals tight end Jermaine Gresham had an emotional game.

With 5:18 remaining in the third quarter, he turned towards Andy Dalton on a go-route, extending his arms over his body to haul in a 30-yard pass, converting a second and nine. Four plays later, Mike Nugent added a 48-yard field goal to extend Cincinnati's lead 24-17. With 4:58 remaining in the game, Gresham hauled in another 22-yarder to move Cincinnati to their own 39-yard line. Four plays later, Gresham added a 13-yarder to Detroit's 38-yard line at the two minute warning, setting up a third and one.

Convert the down and sustain a possession for the Bengals to kick an eventual field goal to take the lead late in the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately Gresham bounced out of his stands prior to the snap for a false start, forcing the Bengals into a third and six from the Lions 43-yard line. Andy Dalton was sacked on the following play and the Bengals were forced to punt. Thankfully a well-placed Kevin Huber punt to the six-yard line and an aggressive defensive approach, allowed the Bengals offense to set Mike Nugent up with the game-winning 54-yard field goal as time expired.

Gresham posted 64 yards receiving (second to A.J. Green's 155 yards) on four reception; all things considered a good afternoon.

But it was his penalties that hurt the Bengals.

With 8:28 remaining in the first half, Gresham was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct, for what appeared to be pushing away an official; or at the very least swatting his hands off of him (or maybe it was just the angle). The penalty moved Cincinnati from Detroit's 20-yard line back to the 35, forcing the Bengals into a second-and-18. They wouldn't pick up more than six yards and Mike Nugent hooked the 47-yard field goal attempt wide left.

Around that time, Gresham left the game for the lockerroom.

We're not sure if Lewis told Gresham to sit out for the rest of the first half or not; perhaps it was a self-imposed exile. However, according to the radio broadcast, the coaching staff actually showed film on Friday regarding how the Lions get those type of reactions out of players. So whatever happened wasn't unexpected and we could see how Lewis would angrily react to Gresham's personal foul.

That being said, the Bengals got good production out of their tight ends against the Lions. Gresham and Tyler Eifert combined for seven receptions for 109 yards receiving, including Eifert's first career touchdown, which gave the Bengals a 21-10 lead early in the third quarter.

Personally, I love Gresham when he turns from an introverted recluse to a fierce player that can absolutely succeed in any position he's put in. The penalties hurt the Bengals, there's no doubt. But the game was won and he was a big part of that also.

Continuing a trend to play heart-stopping games this year, the Bengals win another on a game-winning Mike Nugent field goal.

When the Cincinnati Bengals were being praised about their maturity and ability to overcome adversity earlier this week, they weren't kidding. Cincinnati had lost a 14-point third quarter lead against the Buffalo Bills, only to rebound and do just enough to beat the Bills in overtime.

They did it again.

It wasn't the scoring that slapped their face with adversity. It was Leon Hall's Achilles injury that momentarily cut Cincinnati's sails. Rey Maualuga's hamstring, Devon Still's elbow, and Wallace Gilberry's knee, forcing all of them out of the game. Reggie Nelson, Michael Johnson and Marvin Jones also suffered injuries, thankfully returning at some point during their respective exits. It was Jermaine Gresham's multiple penalties that ended possessions, one that resulted in a missed Mike Nugent field goal.

Everything that happened reverts back to the old, "these are not the games that the old Bengals would have won." Like they did against the Bills, the Bengals slapped all of today's adversity back with the vengeance of a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick.

With the game tied at 24 and 1:43 remaining in the game, Kevin Huber punted the football 45 yards to the Lions six-yard line.

Reggie Bush picked up four yards on first down to the ten-yard line when the Bengals called a timeout. It drew the Lions into making the effort to create an opportunity or a game-winning field goal; they even picked up a first down. Instead Stafford threw multiple incomplete passes, forcing the Lions to punt with 34 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Fortunately for the Bengals, Detroit's 28-yard punt rolled out at the Bengals 49-yard line. Dalton hits Dane Sazenbacher and Giovani Bernard on consecutive passes, reaching the Lions 36-yard line. Dalton finished the game completing 24 of 34 passes for 372 yards passing and three touchdowns for a passer rating of 135.9.

After Cincinnati took their final timeout, Mike Nugent crushed a 54-yard field goal to win the game 27-24.

It all started with seronating songs of A.J. Green, who double-moved cornerback Chris Houston to record an 82-yard touchdown during Cincinnati's third play from scrimmage. Green finished with a team-high 155 yards receiving on six receptions. Yet Cincinnati's defense wasn't able to slow Detroit between the 20s, who strung together three consecutive possessions of 12 plays or more in the first half, one resulting in a touchdown to tight end Brandon Pettigrew.

Eventually, the defense stood strong once the Lions were threatening, forcing a field goal early in the second quarter.

On the Lions ensuing possession, on the 12th play of the drive, Carlos Dunlap blocks an attempted field goal that was scooped up by Reggie Nelson. During his return, Nelson pitched the football (forward) to Carlos Dunlap when Cincinnati's offense takes possession from the Lions 40-yard line. Cincinnati took the 14-10 lead on Marvin Jones' beautiful 12-yard touchdown reception at the back of the endzone, leaving 41 seconds in the first half.

The Bengals opened the second half with an 80-yard drive, capped by a Tyler Eifert 31-yard touchdown on the ninth play of the drive to take a 21-10 lead with 10:42 remaining in the third quarter. The Lions responded with an 80-yard touchdown drive, and Mike Nugent converted a 48-yard field goal with 3:37 remaining in the third to maintain a seven-point lead. Detroit tied the game with 12 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter on an impressive 50-yard touchdown reception by Calvin Johnson, who out-jumped three defenders (Iloka, Nelson, and Burfict).

Cincinnati returns home next weekend to host the New York Jets.

The Bengals have had injuries, penalties and defensive struggles. Through it all, they've taken a 14-10 lead to half time.

Talk about adversity.

Leon Hall suffers an Achilles injury and could be lost for the year. Devon Still was carted off with an elbow injury, already announced as out for the rest of the game. Reggie Nelson came out after an awkward tackle in the second quarter for a few plays before eventually returning. Jermaine Gresham gets a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct and was sent to the lockerroom, but eventually returned as well.

It even seemed that the wind was punched out of Cincinnati's sails following Leon Hall's Achilles injury. Two plays after Hall distracted the football to force an incomplete from the three-yard line, the Lions tied the game on a three-yard touchdown to tight end Brandon Pettigrew. Cincinnati's offense responded with a quick three-and-out and the Lions pieced together a 13-play drive that resulted in a field goal to take a 10-7.

On Cincinnati's ensuing possession, the Bengals reached Detroit's 27-yard line on Giovani Bernard's seven-yard run. Instead of a second and seven, the Bengals have second and 19 thanks to an unsportsmanlike conduct on Jermaine Gresham. Cincinnati is unable to pick up the first down and Mike Nugent pushes the field goal attempt wide left.

Then what happens?

On the Lions fourth possession of the game, on the 12th play of the drive, Carlos Dunlap blocks an attempted field goal that was scooped up by Reggie Nelson.

As characteristic of the half, Jones walked to the lockerroom before the half concluded, favoring his left shoulder.

Bengals cornerback Leon Hall defended a goalline pass to Calvin Johnson. It was the last play of the game. Afterward, he was carted off from the sidelines and the team announced that he was out with an Achilles.

With 3:15 remaining in the first quarter from the Bengals three-yard line, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford took the shotgun snap and lobbed the football near the left sidelines for Calvin Johnson. Bengals cornerback Leon Hall appeared to trip on the surface after disrupting enough of the play to force an incomplete pass, and then began clutching his lower leg. Though he walked off under his own power, Hall was obviously shaken.

The Bengals took a 7-0 lead on an 82-yard touchdown pass with over 11 minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Adam Jones made the error of fielding Detroit's punt at the two-yard line. Though he returned it eight yards to the ten-yard line, it still forced the Bengals to start at their own 10-yard line instead of the 20. A BenJarvus Green-Ellis eight-yard gain, Willie Young offsides, and Clint Boling false start later, the Bengals have first and 15 from their own 18-yard line with 11:12 remaining in the first quarter.

Dalton fakes the handoff left and rolls out right in a naked bootleg. Lions cornerback Houston bit on Green's double-move, leaving him wide open down the right sidelines. Dalton launched the football, caught by Green, who sprints 82 yards to the endzone to give the Bengals a 7-0 lead.

It's Dalton's longest passes in his career and Green's longest reception.
