Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Terence Newman was forced to leave Sunday's game after an MCL sprain against the Indianapolis Colts.

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Terence Newman is "a little sore", according to head coach Marvin Lewis. Newman left Sunday's game in the fourth quarter with a left knee injury and was seen after the game on crutches. He's since had a brace placed on his knee and will continue going through treatment for a postseason run next month.

According to ESPN Insider Chris Mortensen, Newman suffered an MCL sprain. He'll likely miss this weekend's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but could miss the rest of the regular season. Linebacker Rey Maualuga suffered a similar injury earlier this year and missed three games, finally returning after the team's bye week in San Diego.

Second-year cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick could be shifted into the starting role with Newman being out. Currently the Bengals are starting Adam Jones, alongside the probability of Kirkpatrick with a relative unknown covering the slot. When the season started it was Leon Hall, Newman, and Jones. With George Iloka undergoing concussion protocols and forcing Crocker to start at safety if iloka isn't ready, Sunday's lineup could have Jones, Kirkpatrick and Brandon Ghee at cornerback.

Bengals cornerback Terence Newman suffered a fourth quarter knee injury but it's unknown when he'll return.

At some point in the fourth quarter, the team announced that cornerback Terence Newman would not return to the game with a knee injury. Following Sunday's 42-28 win over the Indianapolis Colts, Newman appeared in the locker room sporting a pair of crutches in what was one of the debbie downer moments after Cincinnati's euphoric victory against another division leader.

According to Bengals.com, "Indications are" that Newman's left knee injury is "not a season-ender" but he'll likely miss time and considering there's only three games remaining, perhaps the Bengals are looking to bring Newman back during the postseason.

Cincinnati heads to Pittsburgh this weekend for Sunday Night Football then return home for a two-game homestand against the Minnesota Vikings and Baltimore Ravens -- and provided the Bengals win the AFC North, a third straight home game.

The Bengals have options, including the promotion of Dre Kirkpatrick into a starting role with Brandon Ghee playing the slot (or vice versa). There's always a shot that rookie Shawn Williams could step in at safety for George Iloka (who suffered a head injury but could return this week against the Steelers), leaving Crocker in the slot. Considering that Williams has played all of 11 snaps on defense, that might be unlikely.

The Cincinnati Bengals won the game but may have lost two defensive backs against the Colts on Sunday.

Despite securing a 42-28 win over the Indianapolis Colts and claiming a 1.5-game lead for the third seed, Cincinnati paid a certain price and the cost remains relatively unknown.

When half of Cincinnati's defense missed the elusive LaVon Brazill, turning a short gain into a 19-yard touchdown with 6:30 remaining in the third quarter, safety George Iloka suffered a head injury and laid on the turf for several moments. After he was helped off the field (and looked extremely unbalanced), Iloka was quickly ruled out of the game. Defensive back Chris Crocker moved to safety and Dre Kirkpatrick filled in as the slot defender.

With 9:54 remaining in the fourth quarter, Andrew Luck floated the football down the right sidelines, hitting wide receiver LaVon Brazill in stride for the 29-yard touchdown to reduce Cincinnati's lead, 35-21. Cornerback Terence Newman allowed the inside release, expecting safety help from Chris Crocker which never came.

Then at some point after the play (maybe during it or another defensive play that I completely missed), the team announced that Terence Newman suffered a left knee injury and would not return.

Usually when the team announces that someone will miss the rest of the game after sustaining an injury, it's never good.

After the game, Newman was seen in the locker room on crutches.

If he's unable to go, the Bengals would likely slide Dre Kirkpatrick into the starting role. Normally Chris Crocker would play the slot, but he was forced to replace George Iloka, who suffered a scary looking head injury in the second half in what could be a concussion (based on his reaction coming off the field).

Concussions can be frustrating recoveries (Carlos Dunlap needed several weeks during the preseason) and people rarely say "it's cautionary" while walking around on crutches (though I seem to remember that actually being the case in the past). Keep in mind that nothing is actually known and more details will be released this week.

If neither are able to go against the Pittsburgh Steelers next week, the Bengals would be down to three cornerbacks (Adam Jones, Kirkpatrick and Brandon Ghee) and three safeties (Crocker, Reggie Nelson and Shawn Williams). If the Bengals are forced to call up anyone, Chris Lewis-Harris and Onterio McCalebb are on the team's practice squad.
