Geno Atkins suffers knee injury against the Dolphins

Cincinnati Bengals all-star defensive tackle was carted to the locker room after sustaining a right knee injury.

Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

The Cincinnati Bengals had the one injury that they couldn't afford against the Miami Dolphins Thursday Night. With 4:45 remaining in the second quarter, defensive tackle Geno Atkins was immobile on the field following Lamar Miller's three-yard run inside Cincinnati's 20-yard line.

After being attended to for several minutes on the field, Atkins was helped off the field by Jermaine Gresham and Alex Smith.

The initial read is that Atkins suffered a right knee injury.

On the sidelines for several minutes, a cart retrieved Atkins and took him to the lockerroom.

The team announced that Atkins' return would be questionable -- but we doubt he returns.

Cincinnati is already short-handed on defense, having sustained season-ending injuries to cornerback Leon Hall, safety Taylor Mays while Rey Maualuga is recovering from an MCL sprain against the New York Jets last week.

Additionally the Bengals are short-handed at defensive tackle with Devon Still recovering from an elbow injury, leaving two defensive tackles in rotation -- Domata Peko and Brandon Thompson.

UPDATE: He's been downgraded as out.
